Glasgow Golf Club, Gailes Links

Glasgow Gailes course designer, former Open Championship winner, Willie Park always believed this links to be one of his best creations.

The classic layout is tough, fair and traditionally Scottish, wild heather and gorse define the fairways and the greens are guarded by strategically placed bunkers.

Sandy Lyle, former Open and Masters Champion describes the course as “one of the world’s truly great tests of links golf’ and it has been selected by the R&A as a final qualifying venue for The Open Championship every time it has been at Royal Troon and Turnberry.

At 6903 yards long from the back tees, Gailes is a great test of golf whilst the kinder forward tees provide a fine test for players of all abilities.

Glasgow Golf Club, Gailes Links extends a warm welcome to all visiting Golfers.

Gailes Links is co-hosting The Amateur in 2012 and also hosting the 2012 Home Internationals.

Gailes Links is owned and managed by Glasgow Golf Club, the 9th oldest golf Club in the world. Visitors are welcome to share the golfing traditions and excellent facilities enjoyed by the members. Gailes lies on a marvellous stretch of links land between Troon and Irvine on the Ayrshire coast. Gailes lies in the heart of Scotland’s Ayrshire Golf coast with several celebrated courses within easy driving distance: Royal Troon – 5 miles, Old Prestwick – 8 miles and Turnberry – 35 miles. Also nearby, the Loch Lomond Golf Club has recently opened their Dundonald Links course. At 6903 yards long from the championship tees with a par of 71 Gailes Links is a great test of golf whilst the kinder medium tees provides a fine test for players of all abilities. It is simply traditional links at its best. The challenge starts with a steady stream of four consecutive par fours followed by the signature hole, a par five dog-leg with out-of-bounds to the right and a treacherous green that’s guarded by strategically placed sand traps. It then lets up with a neat par three, only to bite back with another demanding run of five par fours. With its undulating fairways, fine greens and subtle qualities, it is an honest test of golfing skills in true links fashion.

Less than an hour from Glasgow, Gailes is a challenging links course – tough and traditionally Scottish – consistently selected by the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews as a final qualifying venue for the Open Championship. The course has been used every time the Open has been played at Royal Troon and Turnberry. Golf Monthly rated the course in the top 100 in the UK.

Glasgow Golf Club was founded in 1787 and  is the ninth oldest golf club in the World, seven years after the Town Council had started to issue permits for playing golf on Glasgow Green. In 1892 the ground at Gailes was leased from the Duke of Portland’s estate and the Gailes Links course was inaugurated followed three years later with the opening of the clubhouse which remains a most impressive building.

In 1924 Gailes was purchased from the Duke, 12 years after the current course had been laid out by Open Champion golfer, Willie Park Jnr.Willie Park of Musselburgh a former open championship winner designed the course, which opened for play in 1892. Willie kept his designs simple. He wasn’t a believer in creating greens with dramatic slopes , did not much favour ‘blind’ shots, and particularly in the case of Gailes, left the glorious heather and gorse untouched. He always believed Gailes to be one of his best creations; generations since believe he was right.

When a former Open Champion and the winner of the treasured Green Jacket at the Augusta National Golf Club tells you the course is ‘one of the world’s truly great tests of links golf’ then you HAVE to listen! Such a generous verdict on Glasgow Gailes, comes from one of Scotland’s most distinguished sons, Sandy Lyle.

Chosen by The R & A as a final qualifying venue for The Open Championship every time it has been played in Ayrshire neighbours Royal Troon and Turnberry.

In 2008 Gailes Links hosted The Palmer Cup and was also selected as a qualifying course for The Senior Open. In 2010 Gailes Links hosted The Scottish Open Amateur Championship and in 2012 will be hosting the Home Internationals and co-hosting The British Amateur. .
